BEFORE the final...

OK, everyone. Remember to do the following two things before the final:

1. Print the rubric for the final project (found below) and complete your self evaluation. Bring this with you to the final. I will provide the CDs to burn the project onto.

2. Upload your completed digital story (in .wmv format) to blip.tv as follows:

a. Go to http://blip.tv
b. Sign up for an account (they won't spam you) - hint: your Show Name is your screen name (e.g., profcox). Don't use your first and last name.
c. Wait a couple of minutes and then sign in.
d. Click on Upload at the top of the screen.
e. Complete the information for your story (title, description)
f. Browse to your finished story and upload.
g. After the upload completes, click the link to view your video.
h. Copy down the link to your video and have that ready to present at the final!

Section 4 may disregard this message. All other sections:

The time has come for our final survey of the semester. You have all been so patient and helpful with this and I greatly appreciate it.

Please complete the survey by clicking on the link: Click Here to take survey. It should take approximately one hour to complete and you MUST COMPLETE IT ALL IN ONE SITTING, so plan accordingly.

We will be using the first hour of class to complete the survey, after which you can work on your digital story or your lesson plan and reflection. This survey is required for the course and you will receive credit for your participation.

Clarifications on Assignments

Hi, everybody.

I know that the assignment descriptions online may seem overwhelming. I tried to make them really detailed so that you would know exactly what was required, but that may have just seemed like too much to all of you. Let's talk about the schedule for the rest of the term.

Digital Storytelling

I'm hoping you'll all have a draft of a script for class this week. The template should help you make that the right length. That's ALL you need for this week. If you don't have that done for class this week, that's OK. I'll help you through it. You're welcome to find an existing text to act as your script, too (a poem, speech, short story, etc.), but keep in mind that it needs to be SHORT!!! I chose civil rights for two reasons: 1) because we've been invited to participate in the MLK celebration in January and 2) because I thought it might help to limit the range of choices so it didn't seem so wide open. You DO NOT HAVE to do your story on Civil Rights, however. You can pick something else that you're passionate about. If you're struggling, the list of Civil Rights topics is here: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dc426fq_64gqbvbm

In class this week, we'll talk more about the images and media and you can start looking for those.

In class next week, we will put together the digital stories.

Please take things step by step like this so that you don't get overwhelmed by it. There's no need to rush this project. I fully understand that you have a lot of assignments in your other classes, too, so take this in small pieces.

These are due on the day of our final as follows:
Section 1: Tuesday, December 11, 10-12
Section 6: Tuesday, December 11, 2-4
Sections 3&4: Wednesday, December 12, 12-2

Technology-Rich Lesson

This is probably the most confusing to everyone because we haven't talked much about it yet. That's my fault and I apologize. I didn't want to overwhelm you with everything before field and I see now that I should have given you as much information up front as possible. Again, let's take this assignment step by step:

1. You should all have a technology-rich lesson plan - either one that you wrote before field or one that you used during field. There. Half of the assignment is done.

2. The contingency plan is a quick paragraph to accompany the lesson plan that tells me what you would do if the technology failed (make photocopies, for example)

3. The classroom management strategies are another quick paragraph telling me what management strategies you'll use during the lesson plan, particularly with regard to technology. So, for example, if you're going to the lab, will you review the lab rules and consequences before you leave and then use walk-around management when you get there? If you're running a PowerPoint in the class, will you have a student run the PowerPoint so that you don't have your back to the class?

4. The examples of the technology are the actual technology pieces - if your lesson plan indicated the use of the PowerPoint, I need to see that. This is the end of the lesson plan part of the assignment.

5. The paper is probably what's confusing/worrying most of you. I hinted at it before you left, but again, I should have given you more information. I tried to outline exactly what you'll need in the paper. This is a chance for you to reflect on how we should be using technology and how you actually used technology. Let's talk about this in detail in class, so don't worry about it for now. If there are pieces of this assignment that feel unreasonable or unvaluable, let's talk about that. I'm flexible about the requirements, though I'd like the spirit of the assignment to remain intact.

I'll have articles that you can use for this on the blog later today, so look for those on the side bar.

As I said in my email earlier today, please come to me directly if you have any questions or concerns. I can be reached this afternoon by email or at 356-0636 or on Google Talk. I'm really here to help all of you and don't want you to be concerned.

Technology-Rich Lesson Plan

Don't forget your final examination project - the technology-rich lesson plan. See the assignment description and rubric to make sure that you are meeting all of the requirements. Remember that you can use this lesson for your curriculum class or you may be able to use a lesson plan that you created previously for curriculum or a methods class.

Thoroughly review the rubric to determine how you will be graded on this assignment. Notice that you are expected to evaluate your own work before submitting it.

You should submit the assignment on a CD that includes: your lesson plan, your contingency plan, your classroom management plan, your technological examples, and your final paper. That CD should be submitted to your instructor at the final exam (or before - I would love you!) with a printed version of the rubric with your self-evaluation completed.

Digital Storytelling

This week we begin our digital storytelling project - the second that goes in your portfolios. Sections 3 and 4 need to view the presentation found at http://research.uvsc.edu/cox/digitalstorytelling.pps and get started on their scripts over the break. The same is true for anyone missing class on Tuesday. Otherwise, you should get the information you need in class.

You will need the script template to start.

Your digital story should meet the following criteria.

You will be graded based on this rubric.

New Extra Credit Opportunities!

I have had the great fortune this week to attend seminars by two outstanding educators and I want to share them with you. If you are truly serious about having a career in education, I strongly encourage you to watch the videos of these seminars and reflect on them. To get extra credit, watch a video (or watch both and do two reflections) and write a reflection including 3 things you learned from the presentation in your blog.

Patti Harrington
State Superintendent of Public Education
Topic: Education in Utah
Approx. 45 minutes

Listen rather than watch. The video's REALLY bad!
If you went with me to this presentation, you're welcome to just reflect on that experience.

Carol Ann Tomlinson
Master educator at the University of Virginia Curry School of Education
Topic: The differentiated classroom
Approx. 1 hr. 45 min.

YouTube in Google Pages

I also figures out how to embed a YouTube video in your google website so that you don't have to send your kids out to youtube. To the right of every YouTube video is a small box that is labeled "Embed". Copy the link in the box.

Then go to your google page and put your cursor where you want the video to go. In the bottom right corner is a link that says Edit HTML. Click on that link and you'll see the actual HTML code. Make sure your cursor is still in the right place (look for the words that you wrote that come before and after where you want the video) and paste the link you copied into that spot. Then click Save Changes and the video should be there waiting to play.

Here's an example:

YouTube in PowerPoint

I just discovered these instructions for converting videos from You Tube to use in a PowerPoint, in case you're interested. Woohoo! It requires you to download a free program, but hey! Anyway, if you're having a hard time finding a non-youtube video, check this out: http://www.tiara.org/blog/?p=273. Let me know via instant message, email, blog comment, phone, etc., if you have any problems with this.

Things to remember about WebQuests

As per our discussion about WebQuests and what they should contain, here are some things to consider:

The Format
WebQuests must include an Introduction, Task, Process, Conclusion, and Evaluation. You may also consider including pages on Resources, References, and a teacher page.

Stuff We Need
Keep in mind that WebQuests generally require a lot of time - usually spanning several weeks of instruction. They also often utilize group work/ cooperative learning methods. They are always built around some kind of authentic problem and result in a project or product.

Stuff We Like
As we discussed webquests, you mentioned that they should have good visual design without too much to read. The information should be interesting and you should make an effort to get and keep the students' attention. Keep in mind that your students should be able to easily navigate the page - using links or buttons to get around. Also, keep your resource list down (the ol' 7+/- 2 rule).

New link for computer tutorial

Just found out that the link to lesson 3 of the computer tutorial (extra credit, see below) is broken. Here's the link the main directory for the entire tutorial, which should help you work around that problem.

Technology Integration Survey

In class today, we will be watching the following video (http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/66) which reminds us that technology skill is not the only important thing children need to develop at school!

Today's assignment is the completion of a survey to help us improve the technology integration courses at UVSC. Please take the time to answer all of the questions to the best of your ability. Notify your instructor if you have any questions or notice any errors.

The survey can be found at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=tx4Ms8RP3ZBYWEycXe70YQ_3d_3d .

Thank you!

Professional Development Plan Workshops

I've had lots of questions about the write-up of the two workshops that you're supposed to find, so I'll address them here.

Remember that you are supposed to discuss some goals that you have for your professional development with technology. Then, you need to find two workshops or tutorials or some other training where you can learn the skills you need to meet those goals. Start at http://www.uen.org. They offer great professional development opportunities. In your paper, summarize the workshop (include the title, date, location, cost, topic covered, etc.) and then discuss how that particular workshop will help you meet your goals.

I hope that helps!

Welcome to EDEL 3250!

Welcome to Instructional Media! Having completed Computer Technology in Education, you should all be ready to explore some advanced functionality and programs that might be integrated into your elementary curriculum. This semester, we will focus on three main projects: WebQuests, Digital Storytelling, and a media-rich lesson plan. I hope that you will take this subject seriously and that you will put forth your best effort to understand and apply this content, which is becoming more relevant and necessary by the day!
